Where We Work

Mozambique is located on southeastern shore of Africa. It is bordered by South Africa, Zimbabwe, Swaziland, Zambia, Malawi, Tanzania, and the Indian Ocean.  It is roughly twice the size of California and has a population of 21.2 million people (10 million people children under the age of 18 years old.)  Mozambique has a unique history that has lead to its extreme poverty.  It was originally colonized by the Portuguese in the 1500.  In 1964 Mozambique underwent a 10 year war to claim its independence from the Portuguese.  Shortly after that, the country engaged in a 15 year civil war.  Since then, the country has been plagued with many natural disasters such as floods, drought, and tsunami's, leaving the country completely devastated of all economic development and infrastructure.  The average income per home is $370 per year.

There are approximately 1.4 million orphans living in Mozambique with thousands living on the streets.  One third of these children became orphaned due to the high HIV/AIDS rate.  With the destruction of the family unit due to illnesses, diseases, and malnutrition, the children have limited access to education, clean water and health care.

It is a beautiful country with a rich vegetation.  The Mozambican people are hard workers and have a thirst for knowledge.
